Before Buying
Feedback Frames are designed for face-to-face meeting facilitators who prefer low-tech reliable tools like sticky-notes, flip charts, whiteboards, and markers.
Feedback Frames have several advantages over using a web app:
- Do not require all participants to have mobile devices (with charged batteries)
- Do not require network connections, which can be unreliable
- More user-friendly for participants, especially those who are not so tech-savvy
- Avoid participants from being tempted to look at social media during your meeting
- Participants enjoy the tactile nature of the tokens, moving around, and getting away from screens
Of course, if your meeting is online (virtual) with remote participants, then an online idea rating tool is the best option. See online tools with similar capabilities to Feedback Frames.
For now, Feedback Frames only come in boxes of 15 units for US and Canadian customers, and 8 units for international customers. You can always request a discount and maybe see if you can find a friend or two to buy a set with you. In the future, we do plan to offer smaller sets of units. Feedback Frames can be reused over and over indefinitely.
Once you are done a session and have recorded the results (both written at the bottom of each statement-signature sheet and with photos), you simply empty out the tokens from each frame into an empty box and then pour them into a bag or container of your choice. Pack it up, and they’re ready for your next session.
Feedback Frames are made of precision die-cut white laminated chipboard, sandwiched between two sheets of semi-rigid PETG scratch-resistant clear plastic sheets, held together with pro-grade double-sided flexible adhesive. There is a plastic paper protector affixed to the back.
The stand is made of clear acrylic (US Legal size version) or a flat-pack white cardboard (A4 International version).
The front cover is made from printed cardstock, and the voting scale is printed paper, both easily replaced with your own customized covers and scales from the templates library.
This design has proven to be safe and durable for repeat indoor use with children and adults. They are generally not recommended for outdoor use, where they are susceptible to wind and moisture, although some users do use them outdoors in dry conditions with clips to hold in place.
Feedback Frames have such a simple design, you would think they could be easy to DIY. But you would be surprised. We spent many weeks trying different dimensions, materials, qualities and thicknesses of cardboard, chipboard, plastic, adhesives, etc. It can be a real challenge to get a reliable product where tokens fall freely, stack neatly, and don’t overlap and get jammed. Even if you can make one, it can take many hours to make your first, and many hours to make a few more. And the materials required (especially the clear acrylic sheets) can be quite expensive when purchased in low volumes off the shelf.
Why not save your time and effort and just ask us for a discount on a professionally manufactured set, delivered to your door in a few short days.
For the record, we do have patents on the system and method: US 20180189804A1. Canadian 2989904. Australian 2016287792.
US Legal (USA and Canada):
Designed to frame a US legal-size paper, which is 8.5 x 14”. The outside dimensions of a single frame are 14 ¾” x 9 ¼ (376 x 236 mm) and about ¼” (5 mm) thick. They come in a travel box of 15 units, which is 20 x 11 ⅜ x 5 ½ inches (508 x 289 x 140 mm) and weighs 12.7 lbs (5.74 kilograms). In their stand, they are about 6″ (152 mm) deep.
A4 / Letter (International):
Designed to frame a A4 size paper (210 x 297 mm) and also US letter-size paper (8.5 x 11″). The outside dimensions of a single frame are 320 x 246 mm (12½ x 9½”) and about 5 mm (¼” ) thick. They come in a travel box of 8 units which is 330 x 254 x 52 mm (13 x 10 x 2″) and weighs 2.2 kg (4.9 lbs). In their stand, they are about 127mm (5″) deep.
You can download customizable perfectly sized templates for both versions for free from our Templates Library.
Feedback Frames only come in boxes of 8 units (A4 size for international customers), and 15 units (US Legal size for US and Canadian customers).
How many units you need depends on how you plan to use them.
You need one unit for each idea or option that you want participants to rate (score-vote).
The maximum number of tokens that fit per column is 24 in the A4 size unit, and 30 in the US Legal size units. Assuming everyone will not vote in the same column, you can plan for about 30 (A4 size) to 40 (US Legal size) votes per frame. If your group is larger than that, you can either accept a sample of 30-40 responses as good enough, or you can duplicate ideas across multiple units so that everyone gets a chance to vote for the same options.
If you are using them to vote on a predetermined set of options, then it is easy to plan your required quantity of frames.
If you are planning to invite participants to generate ideas for rating (like a brainstorm), then just 8 or 15 units can quickly feel very limiting among a creative group of people. Trying to combine or shortlist ideas in the middle of a workshop, just to fit within a limited set Feedback Frames, can be frustrating for participants and facilitators. Having a minimum of twice as many frames as participants is recommended, but your requirements could easily scale up to 4:1 with a creative and thoughtful group addressing a big open-ended question. It’s better to have too many units than too few.
If you just want anonymous polling or surveying among predetermined options, then there are dozens of online audience response tools to choose from (although they are not as fun as dropping tokens in Feedback Frames).
If you want the real superpower of Feedback Frames, which allows participants to generate their own statements, then immediately rate them, and see instant results, then there are only a few equivalent online tools to consider:
Of course, to provide equal opportunity to use any of these apps in a meeting, all participants need a charged compatible device they are familiar with, a good wifi or data connection, along with technical instruction and support.

The ID is a unique identifier for each frame that comes in handy for a few things:
By writing the frame ID on the corresponding statement sheet, you can easily keep them associated, in case they get separated (like some sheets falling onto the floor).
The ID is also handy when digitizing the results, such as naming photo files and in an ID column of entries in a results spreadsheet. See example results
